There's going to be a special screening in theaters of a couple TNG episodes soon in honor of the blu-ray release of season 1. It's the same sort of thing they often do with having one or two night engagements for some classic film that just got a hi-def transfer, or for an anniversary. Trouble now is that these are often not worth attending simply because it's just basically the blu-ray data projected digitally. Seeing a classic movie projected in a theater on film is a big deal and worth seeing; seeing a hi-def digital transfer of Casablanca is not much different than watching it at home.
But I digress.
Anyway, from the ads I've seen it appears the two episodes they are showing are "Where No One Has Gone Before" and "Datalore". And I was left going, "Datalore"? Really? I mean, quality of season 1 wasn't great, but of 26 episodes you're going with that? The other one is a decent episode and a highlight of season one (though it does feature that silliest of supposed-to-be-menacing terms: "rape gang").
So I wonder, if you guys had the option of picking two TNG first season episodes, which would they be?
I would have probably picked "The Battle" or "The Big Goodbye". Maybe even "Symbiosis" which I rather like except for the very heavy-handed "just say no" scene. Even "Coming of Age" and "Conspiracy" would make a nice double feature.

There's still something about this kind of "remastering" that doesn't sit right with me (can't TV made in the 80s just look like it was made in the 80s??), but I'm at least glad that they did not crop it to 16:9 and so far have not used any additional CG to screw with it. That makes it one step above the TOSfix.
Still not going to buy it any time soon, as I've already got all 7 seasons on DVD. But maybe when all seasons are out I'll give it a look.

I wouldn't be shocked if it gets to Netflix. The TOS remasters are. I'll eventually check them out.

Curious as to how much this will sell, given I don't think there's major demand for TNG.

So I buckled and went to the screening tonight. They showed both "Where No One..." and "Datalore" as well as two of the featurettes from the new set. Each episode was introduced by the Okudas. On the good end of things, the detailing is what you would expect it to be. You can actually see the word "Enterprise" on the side of the stardrive section. But as much as most stuff is film elements, as I knew already all of the phasers and such are new CG since they were all originally animated on video. So it's tough seeing all of the shields, energy pulses, tractors, etc. being redone and still calling it the same. This also means every transporter effect is now a CG recreation. The original files for the crystalline entity were also missing, so that was completely redone in new CG. I kind of miss the old, somewhat clunkly but good for it's time aspect. It has a bit more solidity now. Mixed feelings about it. However, they didn't go crazy with it and matched the shots very well. Aside from it looking a little less "geometric" (Tron-style), I wouldn't know it was new. They are also tinkering with planet shots though, which aggravates me. If something was a matte painting, I'd like to just see you use that matte painting. Still, it is far less than the amount of re-do that they did on TOS and feels a lot more like the original. It bothers me that this will likely be the version put into syndicated reruns for the foreseeable future, but I'm a traditionalist. I do wonder what will happen with things like the CG creatures in "Galaxy's Child"; will they recreate that too? The energy field holding Groppler Zorn in the pilot doesn't look as purple as it should. Ultimately a part of me doesn't care if I can see every thread in Wesley's sweater. It's also a bit jarring that the Traveler's outfit, which I always thought was just striped, is actually stitched into intricate patterns, so it's kind of puffy. We can argue that this is a merit to HD, but ultimately it's a merit to film over video; all this detail was on the negative. I think the shift to making everything video, even HD video is ultimately a mistake. If more stuff was shot and projected on film, we'd see it as it should be seen.
Despite my misgivings, it's still a thrill seeing the show on a big screen with an audience; a lot more laughs at some of the campier elements. A big laugh at a shot of one of the men in the "skant" uniforms, and laughing cheers at "Shut up Wesley!" as expected. The extra features are also pretty good. You know how in the opening you can see guys walking around through the observation deck window? Well, we got to see what that plate actually was. It's just a crude pencil animation of a few characters standing and walking around the table. It was cool to see. There were also makeup tests and bloopers interspersed. I wonder if there is a specific blooper reel on the blu-ray set. Early makeup tests for Worf had him with much longer hair.
We got a teaser for the season 2 set as well, and the new roundtable discussion looked fun. They are also including newly discovered deleted scenes from Measure of a Man (VHS quality, so not great, but still interesting). If nothing else, I think that the bonus features of these sets may be worth checking out on Netflix. Even if I had a blu-ray machine I wouldn't be jumping at the chance to buy these all over again, but I like that they're putting some nice extras on the disc.

So then the Okudas weren't actually present and appeared on screen then I take it. How many people were in the theater? Yeah, it was pre-recorded. I sit in the front row, so it's not always easy to judge attendance, but it was a pretty good crowd. I'd guess 40 to 50. I don't know how much the theater holds, but it was mostly full. -TK

The only way I would have considered attending in my area (NY) would have been if they showed the two episodes I mentioned previously in this thread, but not for the two they showed. It hardly seemed worth the bother for me for those two.

Twenty-five little known facts was fun. There were a few things I hadn't heard before. (Well, at this point in life, maybe I've heard of them all, but forgot). The most startling one was that Patrick Stewart was the one who wanted more sex and shoot-ups for Picard. Ack. I still can't stand Vash.

I had planned to attend the screening of "Measure of a Man" and "Q Who", as I did with the season 1 blu-ray release screening. Unfortunately, I've been fighting a bacterial infection and wasn't feeling up to it (or up to worrying about remembering to take my meds in the middle of it). Bummed to miss out on the extended version of the episode. Hopefully there will be some opportunity to see it that doesn't require me buying a blu-ray player.

They had the season two special screening near me as well in New Rochelle, but I don't like weeknight theater-going, and at that theater I doubt anyone would have shown up for that screening anyway, so I would have been sitting by myself in the theater watching it, which, well, didn't exactly appeal to me, especially not for a couple of episodes that I saw on TV decades ago. I didn't know that the episodes would also include previously unseen scenes though.

No, don't do it. Let the Abrams version stand on its own if it can. I don't like it but some people do and I have nothing against the cast, they're fine actors. To be honest, I don't think Nimoy should have been in the first one.
