It was amusing how back then, they probably viewed Arnold's accent as a terrible handicap, and for that reason, didn't let him talk. That's exactly right. I've heard elsewhere that this is a primary reason why in most of Arnold's early iconic work his dialogue is limited to quick catchphrases. Just compare the number of lines he has in T2 with the original Terminator, where his lines are basically just, "Sarah Connor! I'll be back! Fuck you, asshole!" But American producers were xenophobic about accents back then as it is. I mean, they redubbed ALL of Mad Max because they thought that the Australian accents were too hard to understand! Who ever heard of redubbing and English-speaking movie? -TK

The sequel is on netflix, so when I watch it, I'll watch it there. That'll work, as long as you watch it before they take it down, as happened with "Babylon 5".

Going to try. Will be on vacation next week, so probably won't hit it for another few weeks, with the DVR running on overload.

Funny - I touched on this myself just yesterday, especially with respect to the art work and Momoa looking more like the character than Arnold.Jason Momoa blames the script for his huge Conan box-office flop If you ask Conan fans why the 2011 relaunch film flopped, they'll probably have quite a lot to say. In fact, some say that the actor playing Conan, former Stargate Atlantis star Jason Momoa, is to blame. But Momoa sees things differently and has a gripe of his own—the writing. Two things to take away from this article. Momoa is a comic fan. Conan is a pulp character NOT a comic character. Don't get me wrong, I love the Conan comics and own many copies of Savage Sword of Conan. It's a classic. But it's not the same as the Pulp stories. Secondly one of the comments mentions that Hollywood never uses the R.E. Howard stories. I agree with the poster. Howard is one of the greatest Fantasy writers ever: Pulp or Mainstream fiction. The Momoa film is just okay. Both Schwarzenegger Conan outings are better. Let's put it this way, if an Internet group, a la Trek Phase 2, made a Conan film, I would watch it.

A Conan Fan Film is not something that ever even occurred to me, and probably not anyone else either for that matter, which is why we've never heard of such a production before. Also, unlike the Trek franchise, the studio that owns the rights might not like the idea of a "Conan" Fan Film and might try to sue amateur producers were one to be put up on the Internet.
As for the books versus the comics, I think any Conan fan knows that it was Robert E. Howard who created the character and that he wrote novels. Actually they were mostly chapters/segments that were published in popular genre magazines of the period and were then compiled and put into book form later on. But the art work from artists such as Frazetta were also used for the paperback covers of the novels, so fans of Howard and his works got some exposure to those drawings even if they didn't read the comics. But yeah, Momoa did come across as more of a fan of the comics in that article, which is fine if that's what he likes, but it does leave one wondering if he read any of the Howard novels.
And yes, Hollywood should have made at least one movie that was based on one of Howard's books about the character, although I do think that the first two movies featuring Arnold were true to the essence of the character and the world he inhabits. I can't speak about the Momoa film though because I still have yet to see it, but I suspect that it's not that good.
One thing I never got into was the syndicated TV series. It looked as though it was cheaply made and I wasn't that thrilled with the guy they cast as the character, who Arnold actually suggested to the producers himself, and they went with his choice. But the scenes that I did catch of it back when it was first airing looked cheesy and turned me right off to it, so I never bothered to look at an episode. And apparently I couldn't have been all that far off in my assessment because it didn't last long before being dropped.

Over at The UK Guardian:Is Schwarzenegger ready to make a Last Stand as Conan the Barbarian? He's back as promised, but his latest role as a small-town sheriff has led some to question if Arnie can still cut it as Conan

I need to come back and read all the new stuff in this thread, but I did click on some links that took me to a picture of The Last Stand. OMG, it breaks my heart! Arnold is looking UP at Forest Whitaker! That's just wrong. I don't care that both actors are 6'2". I don't care that Arnold's playing a small town sheriff. I don't care that Arnold's older. It's Arnold!! Forest should be looking UP at him! I can only hope that, in the full shot of that scene, Whitaker is stepping onto a curb.

No matter what happens with the actual picture, box office, critical response, I expect I will at least enjoy this new Conan film. Conan of the Isles is one of my favorite of the old Ace Paperback series and if they do a similar story with Arnold, I think it will work. The guy admits he's older and I respect that. Eastwood did the same thing and managed not to embarrass himself.

Eastwood did the same thing and managed not to embarrass himself. I know the title, but I'm not sure if I read that book or not. If I did it would have been back in the 1980s, and since it was one of the books written by L. Sprague De Camp, it may or may not have made my reading roster. I'd have to look at it to tell you the truth in order to remember.
I watched the Blu-ray of "Conan the Destroyer" last night and noticed when the credits were rolling at the end that L. Sprague de Camp was listed as a Technical Advisor on the film.
I plan to check out the newer much derided film with Jason Momoa tonight. Will report back what I think probably over the weekend, but I expect I'll hate it.

Technically I should probably change the thread heading for this one, but the hell with it.
Does anyone here remember this Animated series?I only learned of it just recently and am wondering how good it is and if it's worth my time. I generally shy away from cartoons, but I'm in the mood for more "Conan" and other than the novels, one of which is on the way, I'm wondering if this will serve as a bit of an alternative also, even though I expect that the gore aspect will be toned down being that it was probably produced mainly with kids in mind. I've read some good things about it though in terms of the overall quality it offers, and I just received the first season of it on DVD today. I welcome anyone's input.

I don't remember it. I remember a weird syndicated Conan live action show. I didn't care much for that. I don't remember a cartoon at all.
