Over at Blastr:Nimoy was NOT happy he was passed over for Star Trek V's villain
The 1989 release Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is generally regarded by Trek fans as one of the worst in the canon. With a rogue Vulcan trying to find God at the center of the universe, and the Enterprise crew in hot pursuit, it was definitely a weird premise. But, it could have been a whole lot weirder.

Wouldn't have made a difference.

Wouldn't have made a difference. I think he would have been fine in the role, but people would have had even more of a problem buying into two Spock's than they did his having a half-brother in the movie that no one had ever heard of before. There's no question he's competent enough to handle such a part, but it would have been reaching farther than fans would have accepted.
And Luckinbill was good in the movie, but the script was the problem.

It was all about the story. The story wasn't very good. I've seen some interesting defenses of the movie, but ultimately, I still don't enjoy it.
It had some good moments, but it wasn't a good overall movie.

I've had this for a long time. I've never actually sat down and watched it. I'm guessing they cut the fan dance.

He cut out a lot of the more heinous, annoying crap, which does make it more acceptable and easier to stomach, especially given that it's patterned as an episode, with classic music and sound effects from the TV series.

Over at Blastr:Shatner reveals compromise he regrets most about Star Trek V By Trent Moore Mon, 10/14/2013 - 9:18am Most fans would agree that at Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was a bit of a mixed bag (at best), but now William Shatner has opened up about the creative sacrifice he thinks killed the flick.

For decades, Shatner was proud of the film and felt it contributed well to the Trek universe. Many many times, he referred to it as a wonderful life-altering experience. Does this mean he's finally recognized, and agrees, that it's a lousy film?
I may be as slow as he is. Only recently did I get that the Carol Burnett skit above was her wanting to speak with Dr. Spock, and she got Mr. Spock instead.

I think Star Trek V is bad movie with good moments. That's about the best I can say about it.
It would have been ballsy if they really FOUND God. Not sure that works in Star Trek.
It could have been like the time they found Apollo, and it really was Apollo.
But Apollo and the greek gods were treated like aliens. It would be Star Trekkish to have God turn out to be an alien.
And THAT would offend people.
Or it if really were God, would they have made him so powerful that he really was responsible for the Big Bang? Would the crew then be prophets?
How would we explain other planets? Other species?
Would God have created Vulcans? Why not in HIS image?
Why would God reveal himself to humans just because they could travel in space?
Ultimately, it was a bad idea.
