I was pleased to learn on Collider today that one of my favorite books of the last few years, The True Meaning of Smekday, is being made into a movie. Unfortunately, it's also being made by DreamWorks Animation who I don't trust yet to make a good movie. How to Train Your Dragon was the best in a long time; the Shreks are amusing but little else. If they are smart they will get Chris Sanders (the guy behind Dragon, Lilo and Stitch and a lot of story work at Disney before leaving the company in frustration back in 2005 or so) involved.
I'm a little sad to see it done in animation and not live action, and really angry that Disney never optioned it. It could have been huge for them, especially since Disney theme parks are a target of its satire at one point. Disney owns Hyperion Books, the publisher, so I'm sure they could have had it if they wanted it.
Having said that, I'm still glad to see it coming because I love it so much and if done right it could be a lot of fun. They've already made one brilliant decision in casting Jim Parsons (from Big Bang Theory) to play the lead alien, J Lo. That casting alone makes me optimistic.
If you've never read the book, it's a fun read. It's written for middle-schoolers, but is totally readable.
