I don't see why this is so important. She was a lousy pilot that crashed. What a waste of $2 million. Buy a house.

We have no idea what happened to them, so attributing her plane going down to her being a "lousy pilot" may not be fair at all. They could have had some kind of unanticipated mechanical trouble that caused her plane to go down, wherever that happened to occur, be it over land or water. Beyond that, it's a mystery that people have wondered about for three quarters of a century, and some still want to know the answers concerning what went wrong for them.

True, but it's $2 million. That's a LOT of money. I hope no tax dollars are wasted here.

True, but it's $2 million. That's a LOT of money. I hope no tax dollars are wasted here. It's probably being paid for via private funding, however, the government now wastes so much money and on so many stupid things that a mere two million bucks wouldn't even register on the scale of outrageous government spending, so even if it is being paid for through tax-payer funding, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. This is at least benign by comparison to all the other tax-payer money that's being waste on complete crap and total nonsense.

Yeah, but $2 million here, $2 million there. It's STILL $2 million, and it adds up. If they cut out THAT wasteful spending, it's a start.
They need a team of people to work on cutting wasteful spending. Base their salary on how much money they get cut from the budget, like for every $250 you get cut, you get to keep $1. When dealing with the billions of wasteful spending, you can make a six figure salary.

Re funding: "As with previous TIGHAR expeditions, funding for this search is being raised entirely through contributions from private citizens, foundations, and corporations. Lockheed Martin is leading a growing family of corporate sponsors. TIGHAR’s long-time sponsor FedEx is aboard with a major contribution of shipping services, and in addition to helping sponsor the expedition, Discovery Channel is producing a television special to air later this year documenting the search. Underwater operations will be conducted for TIGHAR by Phoenix International, the U.S. Navy’s primary contractor for deep ocean search and recovery. They’ll sail from Honolulu July 2nd – the 75th anniversary of the Earhart disappearance." From: inflight.squarespace.com/news/2012/4/17/tighar-to-search-for-earharts-lockheed-electra.html

I figured it was being paid for through private funding.
Thanks, Mel.

I still think it's a waste of $2 million. I WISH I had that lying around.

I still think it's a waste of $2 million. I WISH I had that lying around. No doubt every one of us here wishes we had that lying around. However, I'm sure you've heard the saying that "it takes money to make money", and regardless of how much is being spent on this operation, they're going to make it back and then some in advertising and so forth, so don't worry --it's not a waste of two million bucks as far as the people backing it are concerned. They know they're going to turn a nice profit on that investment I can assure you.
