Anything DC goes here. Discuss comics, movies, TV, cartoons. Hell, even go with the who would win in a fight argument.
I'm a huge DC fan. While I know the general consensus is that Marvel is better, I still am a big fan of all the DCU heroes. I just enjoy reading and watching them more.
I'm currently reading Flash: Rebirth, which is the story of the return of Barry Allen to main continuity.
Superman is my favorite character, but I find I rarely buy Superman comics. I am a fan of all the live action and cartoon stuff, but in comics, I tend to prefer him teaming up as part of some major event.

Also a fan of "Smallville." Anyone else here watching that fine show? Jor-El

I've been watching Smallville since the beginning. That show can actually get its own thread, though I guess posting here is fine too.
This has been a roller coaster season for Smallville. It absolutely sucked last season, but the first part of this season, the show was absolutely resurgent. It was VERY good. Then the same cancerous tumor that plagued the show the last few years came back, and they did a 5 episode arc with Lana. I can't believe how fast the show tanked. Lana left, and they did the Legion episode, which was one of my all time favorites. The show has been better than the Lana arc, but not quite as good as the strong start since.
There's a lot I still like about the show, but they painted themselves into a corner with known continuity.
I just feel they've been holding Clark back, and the show needs to focus MORE on Clark than it has been.

I love comics, but $$, time, and space pretty much reduces me to graphic novels. I've read a bunch--not all, but a bunch--and for me the best is still "Batman-The Dark Knight". Runner-up...."Kingdom Come."

They recently did a mainstream sequel to Kingdom Come. A short time ago, DC brought a multiverse back. It's not the ORIGINAL multiverse, but one with 52 distinct Earths, one of which is the Kingdom Come Earth. The Kingdom Come Superman ended up in the Justice Society for awhile.

I'd never heard of "graphic novels" until I saw the movie 300, which I loved. Where are they sold? I wonder if amazon.com has a graphic novel section.

There are PLENTY of graphic novels online. Most of them though are basically collections of individual comics. So for example, the Death of Superman takes the 7 or 8 comics that dealt with that story, and puts them in one graphic novel. They are pretty good for getting to know what's going on.
So is wikipedia too.

So is wikipedia too. There are also a bunch of graphic novels that are original stories. "The Killing Joke", in which the Joker guns down Barbara Gordon, the long retired Batgirl (thus putting her in a wheelchair for life) in front of her father, Commissioner Gordon, then kidnapping Gordon and tormenting him, is one such 'novel.' The best place to to find them are at your local comics' specialty shop; otherwise visit the Marvel and DC websites. No doubt you can pick 'em up there. JOR-EL

I've never read The Killing Joke, but I hear it was one of the better DC stories. Another good one is Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, written by the same guy, who puts an end to the first 50 years of Superman continuity.

All three tales are way good. JOR-EL

So after finally getting around to reading it all these years later... am I the only one who thinks The Dark Knight Returns is vastly overrated crap?

I wouldn't call it crap, but I would call it overrated.
Interestingly enough is that even though his version of the Joker was on a very different style of Batman, my favorite LIVE Joker was Cesar Romero.
Jack Nicholson was for me, the worst Joker. It was just Jack Nicholson in a clown outfit.
And Heath Ledger's Joker was just a serial killer in makeup. He was a scumbag, but I didn't feel he nailed the role like say, Mark Hamill did in the cartoon.

First, if you watch this, make sure you watch from the beginning. Maybe it's just me, but when I click on that link, it's 6 minutes in.
Ok, so the link above is pretty much like free Justice League MOVIE.
First, you have Kevin Conroy, George Newbern and Susan Eisenberg as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
It's a video game that came out a couple months ago.
It's a fighting game.
But it's also a movie, which if you really want to take the time to see, is pretty good.
This youtube video takes the movie, and cuts it into a feature length film, where the game play is cut out.
So say you're Batman. You watch the movie, and get to a part where you have to fight. Instead of showing the fight, which you would do if you were playing the game, the fight is skipped to the part where you win, and move on.
It's a classic alternate universe story.
In an alternate universe, Superman is drugged by the Joker, and he hallucinates that Lois is Doomsday. The Joker, who had stolen a nuclear weapon, linked the trigger of the weapon to Lois' heartbeat. Superman in his state, kills Lois, and as a result, millions die in Metropolis.
Superman snaps, kills the Joker, and eventually decides to cross the line and bring all criminals to justice, where he gets backup from both friends and enemies, and eventually becomes a dictator.
Batman of course, doesn't like that, and leads an insurgency.
He needs access to a weapon to kill Superman, but because he didn't want the ability to do that alone, it was linked to the DNA of other Justice Leaguers. Problem is, Green Arrow was killed by Superman, and Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman all SIDED with Superman.
So Batman goes into "our" DC universe, and plucks out the counterparts. The story goes from there.
It was worth the watch.

So first, we get Ben Affleck cast as Batman.
If that's not bad enough, the Justice League of America is now becoming the Justice League of Canada.
I hate the people in charge of DC right now.

Don't go to see it, and don't buy it when it hits home video. That's your only recourse. There are two petitions asking Obama to condemn Affleck being cast in the role and for him to ask for his removal. This is the kind of stupid crap people care about in this country, so no wonder it's going to hell.

I really don't get it.
How out of touch do producers have to be to make a decision this bad?
When Bale got the role, people were very happy.
Didn't they see Daredevil?
And recently I watched an animated short where Batman and Superman were in a diner talking about the upcoming movie, and Batman said something that really nailed what was wrong with Man of Steel in just one sentence.
It didn't inspire.

That's the thing; whether not just the writers but the producers and studio have a clue. I'm actually really curious about Shazam! because I've been thinking it would be a great property for them to use. However, knowing that WB has been trying to do everything "gritty" these days after the Nolan Batmans, down to what they did in Man of Steel, I'm worried. Shazam shouldn't be dark and actiony. It should be like the Donner Superman, but not campy. John August had been working on a script for them years ago, and finally they killed the project because they kept wanting to make it darker and he kept trying to tell them that's not right. Since Billy Batson is a kid, I really want it to be a more kid-friendly movie. That doesn't mean make it lame, but they can give it a Harry Potter tone and a PG rating. That's actually something that's lacking now in superhero movies as they get harder PG-13s with more frenetic action, violence and cursing. And there's nothing wrong with that in itself (I still want that R-rated Deadpool movie), but Shazam being a kid means it should cater to that mindset and viewership. And they could make tons of money on it that way. There hasn't been a PG superhero movie since Fantastic Four. Give it an Incredibles feel and it'll be great. I'm scared about a Sandman movie (that's one that should be R). I want Gaiman involved and I don't know if he has the time. It would seem this Flash won't be the TV Flash. So what I would love is if movie Flash and TV Flash were two separate versions of the character that could meet up in a future "Flash of Two Worlds" movie, setting the stage for my ultimate dream for WB and DC to top Marvel's movies: Crisis on Infinite Earths, where each TV or movie version of a DC property is its own world. So we can have Adam West Batman, Linda Carter Wonder Woman, Christian Bale Batman, the cast of Smallville, Brandon Routh, alongside all the new guys in a massive miniseries or multi-movie event. Wouldn't that be just... amazing??? What strikes me most about this rumored schedule is how crazy ambitious it is to have three movies a year like that when we've had no real solid word on most of them until now. If they rush them into production, that's dangerous. -TK

Love the idea about combining universes.
Probably couldn't do Adam West at this stage, unless you have a campy Terry McGuiness.
It HAS to start with Flash.
