This is interesting. It is his dream project. I go away one week and this happens.
I'm just wondering if they will have the same writing team. I know Paramount said it won't affect the next Star Trek movie, but Abrams also said he wouldn't direct Star Wars.

It doesn't look that way, and that may even have had something to do with why he initially declined their offer to direct, but as we know, things can also change. But as of right now here's where things supposedly stand . . .In addition to Abrams as the film's director, Kathleen Kennedy has been named as the film's producer while Michael Arndt (an Oscar winner for "Little Miss Sunshine") will write the screenplay. Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, and his producing partner, Bryan Burk, will produce along with Kennedy. Lawrence Kasdan, the screenwriter for "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" will serve as a consultant on the film, along with Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes").

I hope they keep the visualizations of the other movies, and of course the brilliant musical scores.
I'd like to see this universe age appropriate for the original characters to be there and important, with a focus on the jedi and how much success Luke would have had re-establishing it.
Could Vader really have killed ALL the jedi? Were others in hiding? Would Luke be able to train other jedi? Could the ghosts of Yoda and Obi Wan actually appear enough to TEACH at the academy?

Isn't this 'interesting' ...I very distinctly recall that she wanted NOTHING to do with the last "Star Trek" film that was released in 2009. She even put down the fandom...I distinctly recall that too. Gee, I guess "Star Wars" falls into a whole other category as far as she's concerned.
I hope she doesn't get a call
Over at Digital Spy: Keri Russell wants role in JJ Abrams's 'Star Wars 7': 'I'd play anyone' Keri Russell has publicly campaigned for a role in JJ Abrams's Star Wars Episode 7. The Americans star Russell worked with producer-director Abrams on the hit series Felicity, which launched her career in 1998. I think it would be ironic if he put Shatner in Episode 7. Not holding my breath.
Ultimately, if this is a true movie for the fans, then I think it would have necessarily give us Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, C3P0 and R2D2 as major characters. What are they doing now?
I could see Luke as a powerful Jedi.
The first time we see Luke draw the lightsaber, we need to be as impressed as the first time we saw Yoda fight.
They will need to integrate some newer characters--younger ones.
Do we see children of Han and Leia become Jedi?
Do we see one or more of them become Sith?
The ghost of Yoda--is he around?

I think it would be ironic if he put Shatner in Episode 7. Not holding my breath. Your post, while interesting, offered nothing about Keri Russell and how she dissed Trek fans back in 2007-8 though. Maybe I'm just a little too touchy on the matter and shouldn't care, but she made Trek and its fan base sound as though it was for nothing but a bunch of freaks, and that that was why she wanted no part of it. Now, however, "Star Wars" is just fine and dandy as far as she's concerned.
The woman is an Ass.

Do you have a link to that interview? I don't remember it and would like to read it. The only thing I came across just now is this:...which isn't really that bad as it turns out, especially if they were talking about casting her as a Klingon, which would have been a terrible move for an attractive girl like her. It would have been a horrific casting move had they actually done that.
I recall having wanted.to see her play Spock's mother, originally played by Jane Wyatt in "Journey to Babel" and "Star Trek IV". I thought she would have been perfect for that role, which ended up going to Winona Ryder instead. I don't know if Abrams even considered Russell for Amanda. He probably would have had a much better chance of getting her to agree to that role instead of a Klingon, which would have been incredibly stupid.
At any rate, she may have elaborated more about Trek being for nerds, or even worse. I just don't recall, but I remember posting about it on the old R&S board at the time and I was kind of annoyed about it. But if I saw her reacting in the way she does there about being cast as a Klingon, I don't think it would have bothered me because she's not meant for that kind of a role.
