I haven't read too many of those books. I do think that the Shatner books, are not "bizarre." They represent some of the best Star Trek storytelling since ST6.

I can personally recommend The Eugenics Wars and Enterprise: The First Adventure. I always thought the latter book would have made a great New Trek film. As usual, Paramount screwed the pooch by ignoring the wealth of material that they have in their possession. ;D
