That was one of the most interesting articles you ever posted. I second that. This was very interesting. I'm a big fan of Meyer and , like him or hate him, he saved the franchise from mediocrity not once but twice. I was amused by some posters who question the quality of the film. In my opinion this is still the best Trek film ever made. TWoK is just a great story. That's why it ages well.

I just came across this over at io9:Why Wrath of Khan is Still a Bloody Great Star Trek Movie Charlie Jane Anders Yesterday 9:00am Now that a Star Trek movie is #1 at the box office again, everybody's looking back at the history of Star Trek films. And one meme I've been hearing a lot is that Wrath of Khan, formerly the sacred cow of Trek films, is overrated. Here's why that's not true. I'm pretty bummed out that Khan is in the new flick. I have not seen it yet, but intend to rent it. Cumberbatch is a good actor, so I am interested enough to see his performance.

Yeah, it was a poor choice, especially since it didn't need to BE Khan. The film works pretty much the exact same if the villain really was someone other than Khan.

Yeah, it was a poor choice, especially since it didn't need to BE Khan. The film works pretty much the exact same if the villain really was someone other than Khan. You're overlooking something though. The movie was predicated on him being Khan, and so, the climax was actually designed as a reverse duplicate of the climax in TWoK almost --in some ways, it was a mirror image to it. That's one of the things that seriously undermined and ruined the movie also however, so that entire sequence would have had to be reworked so that it played very differently than how it came off in the final cut of this film.
I know what they were trying to do. They were trying to point out that some things are fated--a destiny that cannot be avoided in some ways, albeit with certain variations concerning how the events play out. But it was a bad idea because it also came across as parody, which wasn't their intent.

As an early subscriber to Starlog, I have to say they got their info right more often than not. Mistakes happen and this looks like one of them, but I miss Starlog. It was a science fiction fan's place to go , pre-Internet. Good Letter, Mr. Nimoy.
