TOS: The “Generations” Gap
From the relatively short time I’ve spend on Reddit, I sense a disconnect with some younger fans and TOS. I’m sure it’s just a matter of perspective, having grown up with all the series at your immediate disposal. However, this old codger is here to tell you why TOS is the best and why you should like it. Heck, I love TNG and I like DS9, but it’s disrespectful, kids, not to show TOS some love! Here is a list of reasons why in no particular order. Pay attention. There will be a quiz later.
• No annoying story arcs- You can watch them in just about any order.
• Bones McCoy’s bitching – Nobody does the cranky doc better than DeForest Kelley.
• Short blatantly sexist female uniforms. No PC crap on this show. It’s Thigh-City!
• No silly Klingon bone heads.
• Clunky Communicators- Sure the Com-Badges make more sense, but they don’t make as cool a noise when you flip them open.
• Engineer Scott- Sure, Geordi’s great but he doesn’t have the passion that Scotty does. It’s fun just to watch Doohan for the gleam in his eye. Not even non-canon Engineer Burt Knox from Star Trek Outpost can match him.
• Real Writers- That’s right, back then we had real writers like D.C. Fontana and Robert Bloch. They weren’t originally Game Designers. They can write a story with full sentences and everything. Not just “Treatments” and “Concepts”.
• Spock- Leonard Nimoy is the best Vulcan ever! (Okay, T’Pol gets my Desert Island vote but that’s different.)
• Ass Kicking- I love TNG but I don’t know how many times I’ve turned to my wife during an episode and said: “This is thought provoking and all, but blow something up , already ! “
• Captain James T. Kirk- I love Picard, but sometimes you have to put the teacup down and kick somebody in the oompa-loompas. Inspired by C.S Forester’s Horatio Hornblower, Kirk knew when to throw diplomacy out the air lock and lay the smack down.
• Their “Future” is your Present. If you don’t like TOS because it’s dated, kids, look around your Mom’s place. Cell phones, i-Pads, home computer. That’s all inspired by this little show that almost got canned its first season.
• The Gorn- Just because.
Feel free to add some reasons. Or some reasons why not!
