As I said over in the Reddit Trek forum: So that's why they killed Kirk off --they were too overworked to think of something better.I'm sure that will be well received there too.

They fell out of a boat and failed to hit water.
A Kirk/Picard meeting should have been epic. Killing Kirk shouldn't have even crossed their minds. It was just dumb.

Dumb pretty much sums it up. The whole Picard/Kirk thing could have really been a lot of fun but it was maudlin.

But when you conceive a project as a gimmick from the outset --in this case to kill off the once most popular character of the franchise-- a shitty outcome should be of no surprise.

How could anyone of any intelligence think that killing Kirk would work out well?

It's pretty obvious now that no thinking was involved.

I think a great idea for a crossover would have been a YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE story, except of course no main cast member gets killed.
That story was terrific and adapted for Kirk would have been even better.

The first TNG film should have been with the TNG cast alone. Generations does a disservice to both the old and new Trek casts. It's a mess.

Arguably, but if you're going to do a crossover, do it right.
You can't pass the torch by killing the torchbearer.
