Okay, Marc --I know you said the last time they had a short-term special sale price that you would probably pull the trigger at fifty bucks for the entire series, but if you don't jump at this I don't think I could respect you. But of course, it's your money. This is a good deal though in my view.

The only reason I wouldn't jump at this is because it's on netflix. So I essentially already have it, but yes, THIS is a fair price. Absolutely.

Suppose Netflix doesn't renew the licensing once it expires? And does Netflix offer the bonus materials that are a part of the Blu-ray sets? I tend to doubt it, but know there was talk about their changing policies with respect to those a while back. I don't know whether they did it or not though, or if they have, if it includes *all* the bonus features that are a part of seasonal DVD and Blu-ray sets of shows. I know we live in rough economic times and that people are having more money problems than they used to --something that I personally can also attest to firsthand, but if you think it's *fair*, it certainly doesn't hurt to have them as a part of your own personal collection, even if you do feel prone to watch the episodes on Netlfix, however often that may happen to be. I'm thinking of subscribing to Netflix myself, but even if I go ahead and do so, I'm still glad I have the entire series on Blu-ray, even if it does rendered my Remastered standard definition DVDs of the show redundant.

Well if it does go off netflix, and the price is still at $59.99, I'd grab it. Plus, I do have them all on DVD. The blu ray is better of course, but it's not an urgency. There are other DVDs I'd rather have.

Technology is always changing. What's likely dethrone blu-ray, and when? Just curious, as I'm way behind in technology.

Thing is, how much more can they do to make it better? They have the picture and sound as good as they can, and they redid the effects. Other than somehow using modern technology to create new episodes using the original actors' likenesses, which one day will likely be possible, I don't see it getting better.

Other than somehow using modern technology to create new episodes using the original actors' likenesses, which one day will likely be possible, I don't see it getting better. You're forgetting that they still haven't released the 16:9 versions of all the episodes, but get this:The Original Series One episode of Star Trek: The Original Series is broadcast every weekday at 1pm, 3pm and 8pm, with each episode repeated a fourth time from 9am to 2pm every Sunday. This is the remastered version, but cropped to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. They are shown in the airing order of the original series, starting with The Cage and moving into series 1. According to a support email, the episodes broadcast are not cut down or edited in any way - ad breaks are shorter instead.
Prior to this, two episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series were broadcast every weekday at 9 and 10am. This was the remastered version, but cropped to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. These ceased at the end of the third series on Monday, 7 March 2011. en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/CBS_ActionSo the episodes have actually aired in that format in Britain years ago already. Which begs the question: When will they be released in 16:9 on Blu-ray?
As I speculated a while back, perhaps they're waiting for the 50th anniversary to roll around to do that. I wouldn't be surprised.
That would also put me in an awkward position, given that I'm something of a completist with respect to collecting where TOS is concerned. Would they release it with the 4:3 format in a dual package release? Well, that wouldn't be cheap --at least not for a while, so I wouldn't rush to get it. And despite being eager to see the episodes in that format, I'd have to look at one or two or three of them first before deciding if that format is either good or bad for the show.
And this says nothing of what else can be done with the show. They can change the sets to look more modern and futuristic with newer, cheaper, more advanced CGI that hasn't even been developed yet, although I suspect this won't occur till after I'm gone, so I wouldn't be around to see it. But I think it will happen one day, and if they're true to the original vision, rather than wanting to turn the bridge of the Enterprise into a variation of an Apple commercial like the J.J. Abrams films, for instance, it would probably be a beautiful sight to behold.
Too bad I'll never get to see it. :/
