So pretty much the same things they've been kicking around for 2 years. Good to know Trek's not dead at Paramount, but how good that is would depend on who's in charge. I also hate the idea of involving a new streaming service which I won't pay for. Movies are movies. Paramount's in rough shape financially, so a theatrical film could be a gamble, but I would hope at least for a hybrid release. When is Quiet Place II ever going to come out???

Ultimately, it comes down to story. I don't know if I would actually spend money on a new crew. What does a new crew bring to the table that you don't see on TV?
At this point, if there is no Kirk, I won't spend money on a movie.
Star Trek needs a Filoni.

I regret to say that I have no real interest in it anymore, just as I have no interest in "Doctor Who" since they turned him into Jodi Whitaker, only in the case of Trek, my having had to turn my back on it is much more tragic considering it's something I've followed since I was a kid. With Who in contrast, my investment in it only started in 2005 with the revival of the series with Christopher Eccleston first stepping into the role, and even at that, I only viewed it as very tongue-in-cheek because of the British humor, which just illustrates their not taking that franchise too seriously themselves. That's not a criticism either by the way. The light-hearted quirkiness is a staple of Doctor Who. But with 'Star Trek,' the studio actually took something away from me, and I detest them for that reason.

For me, it's about what the story is. I did like Discovery Season 2 but that was because of Pike. I know how you feel about Star Trek too. It's never been right with me since Generations.

I watched the second and third Trek movies today, with the Chris Pine crew, and enjoyed them, as Trek movies, if not Trek gospel. To be honest, at my age, my knowledge of Trek gospel is a distant memory.
To my surprise, Simon Pegg is listed as the main writer of ST Beyond. I enjoy him.
I had read somewhere that the Noah Hawley movie might bring back Jayla from ST Beyond as a replacement for Chekov. Ah, so it's about a pandemic and has been, appropriately, shelved due to real life. Too bad. I looked forward to seeing her again.

It says a lot to me that I don't care enough about these movies to rewatch them.
I think I've seen STID twice and Beyond once.
I think ST09 was overrated. STID was a movie that got worse the more I thought about it.
Beyond was just ok. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was a wasted opportunity. Without looking, I think that it came out in 2016, which was the 50th.
I feel that Beyond was just an average Star Trek episode. Not bad, but not great. Certainly not movie worthy.
And absolutely a waste of the 50th anniversary, which should have done what Doctor Who did. Now THEY knew how to mark a milestone.

You're right. It was the 50th anniversary.
I don't mind that it wasn't mentioned. I'm older than the rest of you, and I forget things. I forgot it was the 50th anniversary. There was a time when I noticed decade anniversaries, but not anymore.
Beyond that (pun intended) maybe you all would have been offended if the anniversary had been mentioned, since you don't like this rendition of Trek, and don't think it deserves the name.

It was a lost opportunity. Yes, they made a movie, but they didn't hype it up as part of the 50th. I don't know if you watch Doctor Who, but it has some similarities to Trek in that for the entire run, it was one continuity. They took their 50th and ran with it doing a tribute that had the kitchen sink.
This movie was just an average movie that could have been an average episode of Star Trek.
Nothing special about it at all.
Imagine a story that involved the surviving members of the original cast, with some TNG characters thrown in. Some kind of threat that involves both universes and requires the original Kirk to help solve it. Something absolutely epic.
THAT would have been worthy of the 50th, and would have had something for everyone. This assumes you have a writer capable of making that story of course.
Trek doesn't have that right now, or then.
But this is what they needed to do for the 50th.
Instead, we got Beyond.

They could have done that. Maybe it would have been great, or warmly nostalgic.
Unfortunately, TPTB have no interest in mentioning or promoting the fact that Trek had previous incarnations.

And that is exactly why Star Trek isn't where it should be.
