Is anyone the least bit surprised by this? She's probably the most annoying character in the history of the franchise. The Jar-Jar Binks of 'Star Trek' perhaps. And I have to tell you, I see this and it makes me glad I didn't invest any time in this show over this past season. She may have even gotten the job for what they're highlighting here. So I'm even more glad that I skipped it if anything. I don't want to sound mean, but these people are clueless. Everything is about checkboxes now rather than actually caring about what makes a good Trek series and adventure. It's tiring. I watch less and less TV because of this nonsense. She is a thoroughly unappealing and supremely annoying character in almost every regard. In the original series, if by some quirk of fate, had her character ended up on the Enterprise at all, she would have gotten on everyone's nerves and been in everyone's way.

As I suspected, she calls herself queer because she dated around. It's the hip thing now to be "pansexual". But these people can wear it as a badge of honor and identity where it once might have been just "that time we fooled around in college" that's stereotypical of even straight women. Furthermore, as "gender identity" has been so bungled and muddled, if you dated someone of the opposite sex who for awhile "felt like the wrong gender", that might qualify as "dating a trans person" and thus you'd think, "Oh, I guess I'm pansexual." And considering she's married now, it's annoying to hear someone say they are "proud" for something that is no longer relevant. "I'm cool, guys! I'm attracted to everyone!"
What it really comes down to is that being "straight and boring" is seen as undesirable, and is constantly being othered by the media. Which is a huge problem when you consider that's 90+% of the population that is subtly being marginalized in the name of demarginalization. Even the Kinsey study would suggest the majority of people are pretty much straight, even if everyone's a little gay. Is that something to toot your own horn about?
All of this is irrelevant to the show except that they love the Brownie points of saying their identity is special. I can ignore it because Tilly isn't and I assume she wasn't cast that way (unlike Anthony Rapp whose sexuality was clearly involved in his casting). A little Tilly does go a long way, and it's almost like they try to make her annoying. But that's the writing too. A character like that can work (Reg Barclay, for example). But yeah, it's overkill at times. And yet I don't find her as annoying as Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks who after one episode had me gnashing my teeth.

It's amazing how things have changed over the years. I can't imagine a Star Trek show in Season 3 where I see a headline like this and have to google the actor's name.
It was only StarFury's comment about her being Jar Jar Binks that I made the educated guess that she's Tilly.
There is nothing about Tilly that I liked, and I haven't seen Season 3 yet.
I still have to get to Season 3. I think what I will do is finish Titans, bang out Season 3, and then start Expanse. I'm nearing the end of a couple of hour long shows.
I really am not a fan of Hollywood right now.

But yeah, it's overkill at times. And yet I don't find her as annoying as Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks who after one episode had me gnashing my teeth. I only saw a couple of episodes of Lower Decks and didn't bother with it after that. And I'll be honest with you...I didn't even bother to read this article about Wiseman. I'm sick to death of this garbage and all it takes now is a headline to make my eyes roll with lack of patience. I figured Barclay's name would come up here after my prior post though, and to his credit as a character, at least he was only a recurring character and not a regular part of the crew. For that reason in itself, Barclay was more bearable to endure. You knew you would only see him once in a while. When I first saw Tilly I thought she might only be in a few episodes as they established Michael's character and that then she would be written out, or would only be seen very seldomly perhaps. When I realized that wouldn't be the case I was pretty disgusted, and when I saw how she was written into their sorry excuse for the Mirror universe, my stomach probably actually turned a few times. I may have even tasted a little vomit at that moment too. Yes, I hate the character that much. Barclay was annoying at times, but he at least had some redeeming qualities, and one of them was sometimes humor. Who can forget the scene where Picard mistakenly refers to him as "Mr. Broccoli"? With Tilly, they portray her annoying traits as virtues, and they're not. She's just annoying as hell.

Gay, okay, fine. None of my business. To each his or her own.
Ellen Page came out as gay. She's said she's a "he" and a "they."
He? Okay maybe. But they? How can a singular person be a they?
I am too old for this shit. <g>

Ellen Page is a woman. No matter what she calls herself, she's a woman. You can't change your gender like you do socks. I agree--if she's gay, who gives a damn? It's almost like being gay no longer matters for careers, so this is the next thing to get her relevant.
And I agree about Tilly. Very annoying character.
