I read the article. It would be very exciting if true, but I don't believe it. Plus, Shatner himself was shown the article and claimed it was just a rumor.
However, he was in the news recently talking about how he would be willing to return.
Until I see it, I won't believe it.

Bless his heart, Shatner is always willing to return. Couldn't hurt.

Through the years, his comments varied on the subject. Sometimes he is gung ho, sometimes, he says never.
Problem is, I don't think Paramount has ever really seriously engaged him, which is ridiculous.

I suspect the advances (for good or ill) in CG de-aging and deepfaking helps the talks of Shatner returns, since they could bring him in and work some VFX magic to make him look younger and fitter. But I don't know if it would serve story to do so at this point.

Honestly, with de-aging, they can probably come up with the best story possible. It would mean that you could not just give Kirk a post-Generations future, you could have Kirk from TOS meet movie era Kirk in some sort of awesome adventure and you could have all the original actors back.
You could have TNG meet TOS properly. You could do so many great things. I think using Shatner with de-aging would open up story possibilities.

But I don't know if it would serve story to do so at this point. I saw "The Irishman" and I'm not so convinced about this. Oh, sure, the technology is incredible, and in time it will get considerably better and more advanced. But De Niro in that movie is referred to numerous times in the first third of it as a kid and a young guy, but they could only do so much with the software and those filters. He was significantly heavier, with the stocky, chunky build of a much older man, and the de-aging software could not address that, and they didn't try other CG effects work to address those problems. They could have attempted it, but for whatever reason chose not to, in part likely because of budget, but also becsuse they may have had concerns about it not looking authentic. My point is that the software will not be able to address those things with Shatner. His face is much heavier than it ever was in the films, and don't get me wrong, Marc ...I know you love the guy. I do too. I grew up watching him and loving Trek, along with Nimoy and Kelley, but he is practically 90, and one of his mentors, who was even older, just passed. I don't know how they would bring him into it, but my feeling is that that time has passed, and if they were ever going to do it, it should have been done a long time ago, and that now is probably just too late. And for these Kelvin flicks? Please. Nimoy didn't even come off good in them. To a fair extent, he wasn't even the Spock we all know and love. These are a different generation of writers, and they don't know Trek the way we do, especially not that original iteration of it. They're not close enough to the material, and never were.

It's possible and sounds interesting, but it sounds super-expensive. I'd be surprised if they did this.

Movies are super expensive. They did something on Disney Plus that showed de-aging. The de-aging wasn't perfect but it was enough that it hardly ruined anything. The point is having the character back, and de-aging can allow for amazing stories. Hell, I'd be happy with an animated story. They can be canon.
The show that has me interested right now is Strange New Worlds. They have shown glimpses of understanding Star Trek on Discovery--but they are too concerned with being politically correct that it sometimes gets in the way. It IS possible to make Star Trek right.
