I just got back from seeing the new John Carter movie. I haven't read the books, but I thought the movie was quite enjoyable. It's a nice old-fashioned space epic. At times I was reminded of Dune (but just the good parts). I won't spoil the movie here, but I hope it does well enough to get the sequel greenlit. For the most part the CG didn't feel like just CG in your face like in some similar movies. The design work was lovely in a lot of places, and a lot of it was things you just take for granted, as they should be. Like costume and make-up and such.
I urge anyone who's interested to go see it so it makes money. The Disney marketing guys have proven over the last couple of years that they don't know what they're doing, so it's up to us to get the buzz going by word of mouth. I hate when bad reviews come out like Roger Ebert's where he is more concerned with artificial logic questions like why Martians have airships but fight with swords instead of firearms. Reviews like that reveal people who totally miss the point. You go with it or you don't, and I did. Don't bother with the 3D if you have the option, because it doesn't add anything.
I figure we can use this thread to discuss book stuff too if we want. Maybe just include "BOOK SPOILER!" or "MOVIE SPOILER!" when relevant?

I've been debating seeing this movie since I heard about it. I know nothing about this franchise, other than John Carter is some Earth guy who went to Mars and can kick ass because of the lack of gravity.
I may check it out.
