So in the last year, the left has come after Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, Mr. Potatohead, the MUPPETS, Curious George, Gone With The Wind, and Dr. Seuss. Most of that has actually happened since Biden took over. I think Mel was trying to learn a bit about wokeness, and this cancel culture is a great example of it. I didn't read the link you left. (It's late and I'm sick.)
At first, I thought that getting rid of Confederate statues and flags was a good idea. It would be a way to remind people to try to think differently about the present. Then things got out of hand.
I don't agree with Cancel Culture. It's been taken to a degree that's beyond ridiculous, not to mention extraordinarily expensive if it were carried out. I don't know any Dems who agrees with Cancel Culture.
What troubles me are whites who hate blacks and consider them sub-human. We have generation upon generation who grew up hating blacks and/or considering them sub-human. Each generation taught the next it's prejudices and hatred. I know because I have blood relatives who have done this.
I wish it were different. I wish all of us were treated as equals, and would treat others as equals.

The problem with getting rid of statues is that a) it invites MORE of the same behavior and moving the line, and b) it disregards the feelings at the time the statues were erected and what they REALLY symbolized, rather than what revisionist historians claim it symbolizes.
The Confederate cause was wrong, but the people who fought it were passionate and while they went astray, they were Americans who died in a war, honored by those they died for.
Instead of taking the statues down, it would make more sense to talk to a Southerner and learn what they mean.
Now, the lunatics on the left have moved on to other historical figures like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln. It's disgusting that they cancel culture essentially wants to cancel America and turn it into something horrible.
And they have total power right now.
No one condones racism. Part of that has to mean that you stand against racism in ALL forms, and that means hating white people is just as bad. Hollywood clearly hates straight white males, and demonizes conservatives. They are not just trying to destroy America, they are trying to erase it.
Hate is the narrative and the left is pushing it. Their hate is no weaker than those of the monsters in the KKK. It's a sickness.
If it's true that you don't know democrats who agree with Cancel Culture, it doesn't matter if they keep voting for democrats that do.

My family is from the South. I know what the statues mean to Southerners. But I feel like some of them use these items from the past as an excuse for their anachronistic attitudes, that they believe those attitudes belong in the present. |

Not sure what you mean there. The bottom line is that cancel culture is basically a means to weaken and end the first amendment. They keep expanding what they cancel. They have even gone after Pepe LePew, and that's not even a joke.
