I am surprised we never had a discussion on The Orville going on this board. Maybe the show came out during or ridiculously long hiatus.
It's interesting since I'm currently rewatching it. The show is having a new season premiere on Hulu on June 2.
Interestingly enough, the show captures more of a Trek feel than current Star Trek. I guess it makes sense since quite a few Berman era Trek writers worked on it.
But it was better than latter Berman era shows, and I guess having a different head of the table helps. Plus, when you aren't working in Roddenberry's universe, creative choices that differ from his vision are ok.
What I find enjoyable is that MacFarlane really surprised me in his ability to pull off legit sci-fi.
He obviously is so talented in comedy, but to really nail a Trek-like space show seemed out of his wheelhouse.
Ironically, the WORST part of the show is the comedy.
But the stories are very good.

He's a huge Trek fan. He actually tried to buy the Trek franchise from CBS, but he couldn't meet the price they had in mind. It was a little too steep.
But I hate that they moved the show to Hulu. I'd love to watch it, but don't want to subscribe to yet another streaming platform in order to see it.
It's gotten ridiculous.

I get that. Have you ever watched The Orville when it was on Fox?
There is one episode that was absolutely putrid and disgusting. But that's one episode.
I just watched the Season 3 premiere and it was the best Star Trek in years.
It's interesting because MacFarlane is a huge left wing nut, but he doesn't shove it down our throats in this show at all. When MacFarlane was looking to take over Trek, I thought it was a terrible idea. I didn't think he had it in him to make it work.
Brannon Braga is involved in this show and in spite of that, it's still good.
It's like Star Trek without the canon of Star Trek.
For what it's worth, there was a deal with Hulu that allowed me a year for $0.99 a month.
There are commercials, but can't say it's too expensive.

How the heck did you get that deal?
And yes, I saw all the episodes of "The Orville" when it aired on Fox.
I don't know why the hell they had to move it to Hulu.
This will probably be its final season, or maybe they'll be generous enough to give them one more.
Stupid move by Fox imo.

They had it in December. Hell of a deal. Meanwhile, I'm watching it still, and the show is fantastic. Better Star Trek than Star Trek.
I recommend buying Hulu for a month, 2 months max and do an Orville binge watch. If you can get through the one gross episode, and you can with fastforwarding, it's worth it.
What I find interesting is some writers I did not like from Star Trek work on this show, like Brannon Braga. Maybe being free from Trek canon helped him, or maybe MacFarlane is better than Berman.

I will say, as I'm catching up on all the new Trek, Lower Decks is actually not too bad. I just finished it and it's comparable to The Orville, except sticking with the comedy tone rather than trying to be more of a regular Trek tone. I hated the first episode, but after 2 or 3 the show settled into its tone and while I still have some problems with it, I can actually agree with the other fans that believe it to be the best Star Trek being made right now. It's obvious that it's made by fans who know their stuff and make lots of nods to all eras of the show. It feels more like the TNG era and has fun throwbacks to TOS. It has even taken oblique shots at DISCO a few times. It winks at the fans a lot too. And there are lots of TAS aliens. So if what you like about Orville is the Star Trek you remember mixed with humor, you might have a laugh watching Lower Decks. Just don't worry if the first episode or two don't work for you.

I saw a couple of them at the beginning, but I can't subscribe to Paramount+ to see it. I hear the new 'Top Gun' movie is good, and I might have went to see it, but then Paramount had to appear on a long list of companies offering to pay their employees to have abortions if they need to travel from one state to another to get one, and I thought, well, one more reason not to spend money on anything they produce.
What happened to the days when you could go to a movie, or just turn on the TV without having to be concerned about crap like this? We were a different country back then, and it's one that I miss.

Top Gun is a fantastic movie and well worth seeing. I'm so glad it's doing good business because hopefully it sends a message to Hollywood. I wouldn't feel too bad about seeing it, since Paramount probably had very little involved with the actual production and mostly just handled the release. The movie was primarily produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. I don't subscribe to Paramount+ either, but an acquaintance of my sister gave her a Roku with a bunch of her accounts signed in, so I sometimes just watch that and don't pay for it. Happy Fourth! I miss what we were, but I will hold fast to what I still have.

No, I'm not following it. I can't. I don't have Hulu and I won't subscribe, but I noticed that there's been recent talk about him (Seth) having done a trans episode.
Remember the days when we could watch sci-fi shows in peace, without having to see this kind of nonsense, not even once in a while, as opposed to now with it being an incessant and routine matter of course?
It makes me glad I'm not subscribed to Hulu streaming either.

It wasn't so much a trans episode. It was a story arc that dated back to the first season. I'll give a spoiler since you may not mind, but basically, there is a race of beings that are all male. Every so often there is a genetic hiccup and a female is born. Females are offensive and second class citizens. Being female is considered disgusting in their society, which of course offends the Union.
But this race is important to the union (the equal to the Federation) so they put up with it. Besides, it's tolerance of other cultures, etc. Obviously, based on the race, everyone is essentially gay, but that's the nature of the race. Babies are hatched in eggs. The character who is a crewmember had a daughter. So they did a whole episode on whether to have the child forcefully turned into a boy. The decision had to come from the governing body of the homeworld, and in the end, they ruled in favor of the medical change.
So in season 3, the child, who aged rapidly of course, found out his origins and the episode involved reversing the process, which has major ramifications on the relationship between the Union and this race.
Think of it more like when TNG introduced the trills to an extent. It wasn't bad.
There was ONE episode in the second season that was really bad though, and I would advise to skip it. It added virtually nothing to the story and was easily the worst of the series.

What do you know. That phrase, gay porn episode, actually pulled up the episode! Season 2 Episode 2 Primal Urges. I don't get Hulu. Yesterday, I canceled all our streaming things. We rarely watch them. My brother will ask me to put Disney+ back, and when he does, I will.
Instead, we're getting HBO on DTV, and that gives us free HBO Max streaming. It's better this way, because my handicapped family don't know how to stream. I've tried to teach them, but it didn't work.
We're loving The House of the Dragon (we never saw GOT). Luckily, it airs on HBO TV, so it's easy for my family to watch reruns of it, if they want to.

The gay porn episode was the only one that really was awful. Everything else was fine. And the third season was damn good.

We saw Top Gun: Maverick, and it's excellent. We've seen it twice now. Well worth watching.

Yes, the sequel is far better than the original.
Way back when, the original was a date-night movie. My brother wanted to see it. Every seat was taken by high school couples, who were more interested in each other, including yakking and smooching, than watching the movie. That was annoying as hell.
I also didn't believe Tom Cruise (who I like very much) credible for the role, nor Kelly McGillis credible as his love interest (I know she's gay). For me, Cruise was too young for the role, and she looked too old. She's supposedly just five years older than him, but looks far older. Maybe she lies about her age.

Well, she aged terribly. He hasn't. I don't know how old top gun level pilots are. He was a young hot shot, kind of like every movie he did back then. But the sequel was so much better.
