I've spent the last couple years doing a total rewatch of all things Star Trek and have recently finally gotten up to the newest stuff. I watched through Lower Decks and then Prodigy. I wasn't sure what to expect, as it's obviously made for kids. Some of the writing has gaps in logic, but it surprisingly feels very much like Star Trek, albeit aimed at a bit younger demographic. The same of course cannot be said for the badly written R-rated nonsense of Picard. There are a few odd leaps of logic to the show, but Prodigy was actually not a slog.
I thought I'd write about it here though to highlight a specific episode, "Kobayashi". The basic premise of the show is that a bunch of alien kids stumble on a Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant, and basically become its crew, guided by a holographic Captain Janeway. In this particular episode, one of the kids goes on the holodeck and takes the Kobayashi Maru test. It was a nice little love letter to the franchise, because they set it on the Enterprise-D bridge and he populates his crew with holograms of famous characters. Beverly Crusher is there, and then using existing Star Trek audio clips, they bring in Uhura, Odo, Scotty, and Spock. It was a very nice little tribute to the characters and to the actors who had died. They found ways to work the audio together into coherent dialog. I think Cram would appreciate it.
There's no word yet on when a home media release of Prodigy will be, but if any of you ever get the itch to check it out on Paramount+ or Nickelodeon, I suggest checking out that episode. It mostly stands alone and is a good watch for fans even if you aren't interested in the rest of the series.
