Star Trek VI Is A Perfect Tale Of How Idealists Grow Conservative Do you believe this? Read it all the way through, and then check out the writer when you're done. Just click on her name at the top of her screed. Apparently she equates 'conservative' with "hateful bigot," and is incapable of understanding just how idiotic that actually is.

I think your last sentence sums up the article without needing to click on it. I think one of the biggest reasons I always liked Kirk the best was because he was clearly more conservative in his actions. Sisko sometimes had a similar vibe which is why he was number 2 of the captains.
Kirk was not a bigot. He was a father whose son was murdered by a group of people that has been his enemy his entire life. That's not racism, that's natural. The thawing of the cold war did not end the mistrust in Russia for people who fought it. And they were right. Let's not forget the 2012 debate when Obama blew off Romney's assertion that Russia was the biggest threat. Obama was a fool and so were those that laughed along with him.
Romney was right. Conservatives understand that we are not all hand holding, song singing, happy humans that get along. Trust, but verify is a conservative ideal.
But in ST6, Kirk was being human--naturally dealing with the pain of having a murdered son. So no, he wouldn't care about the Klingons. And his dealings with the Klingons were always horrible. The Klingons were a vile group of people that used violence and intimidation as a means to an end. They were everything humans in the 23rd century stood against.
That said, despite these very justifiable feelings, Kirk overcame them and right won out in the end. Let's also not forget that in ST3, Kirk tried to save the life of the man that killed his son.
Kirk's anger was not backed up with actions. He did not conspire with Cartright and try to keep the war going. He did the right thing. And that was the conservative way.
