Don't forget to try your best to recruit people to start posting here. While a 3-5 person conversation is fine, and works, why not try to get more people involved?
It starts with the few we have. Send emails, especially to people who posted on AOL.

So with the AOL boards gone--how can we grow this thing?

You have done yourself proud, Cram. It's a nice board. I will send a link to a few people I work with who might join. In some ways the board's "Intimate Setting" is a drawing point. Some boards are too big and have no personality.

I'm surprised there aren't more here from the R&S board

Definitely help out. Plus, this can evolve. I think we were off to a great start 3 years ago, but when AOL came back, it made sense to go back there.
It doesn't look like that will happen this time, but unfortunately, like 20 of the 25 people we have didn't return yet.
So emailing people from the AOL board will help. Word of mouth as well.

It is, but it's our island. I'd love to see it expand a bit, but I feel as if we're at the same level as before, if not a little higher because of more to do.

We should have just migrated over to the CompuServe SF/F Forum as I suggested; more people, even though we would have been left largely to ourselves, and I would only have to post seeder topics once rather than twice.

Hey Crambam! Remember me? I found LBatista on another board not trek related, and asked her if she was the one from the AOL Trek boards- she was. She asked if I knew where you were these days and I googled you. It led me here. So is anyone here posting under a different name than they did when they were on the AOL trek boards? I'm still in touch with MSPOTE, Drew1365, and Kahvis via facebook. -Monica aka Luvhomescl aka STFC Luv from the AOL Ron Moore board!

I started out with a few other names, but they all had Mel in them. I have pretty much the same name I had for the last few years on AOL. I'm in touch with Kahvis on Facebook, too. I didn't realize Drew is there.

The AOL boards basically continued on until earlier this year. About 3 years ago, they had threatened to shut the boards down, and we prepared for that by creating this board. AOL changed their minds, so we went back until about February, when they shut them down for good.
Relatively seemless transition, and in many ways, this is better. Feel free to grab others from the old boards. The more the better.
Star Trek of course is the main theme here, but given that it's not exactly an ongoing thing, there's plenty besides Star Trek to talk about.

I miss the days of a single board to post to frankly --it was a lot easier to follow just what was going on without having to hop around from place to place.

I use the "10 recent posts" link on the main page. It keep me abreast of stuff going on in each folders as long as I check it once or twice a day.
I understand not liking to hop around though. I used to like the AOL "search all topics" folder in the old-school Trek boards, and hated when they got rid of it.

Lately, I've been using the "New Topics" icon, next to Home (both are under the board title). It pulls up new topics, and new posts added to existing topics.

I wasn't aware the old AOL trek boards were around until recently. I'd gone to AOL and couldn't find them- I figured they were long gone. If I'd known I'd have checked back in. Ah well. Its nice to find you folks... I'll pass the word along.

I've found this board on Yahoo by searching "Cram AOL Proboard." It pulls up some of your posts here. That's great, because I've lost the link before, and sometimes I use other computers where I don't have the link.

I wonder why they don't join in. They're welcome.

I've noticed we have more than our share of guests on this board. I think we had 69 in the last 24 hours. I wonder why they don't join in. They're welcome. It's just us, periodically checking the forum throughout the day while not signed in. I've also noticed regularly that there are two or three people listed as being here viewing one of the two top sections, without seeing anything posted. It's as if we have phantoms popping in and out of this forum at random, as though they're not really here and are just echoes. I wish we could find a board like the old AOL R&S Folder. I miss that format. It was a lot easier to work with, and there was only one folder to visit and check. I don't like the way topics are scattered all over the place here by comparison, and posting articles requires a lot more effort.

It may not be just us. But if it is, so be it. This board is serving its purpose. I still don't get why the AOL boards were shut down. I realize in many cases, social media changed things, but not for what we do.
DC Comics did something similar. They shut down all their boards, ending all ways for people to talk about DC Comics--at least there.

Facebook and Twitter just don't interest me in the slightest. ;D I don't believe in either, haven't created an account for other, and have no intention of doing so. I wish Blastr would increase their services roster for posters though. Ever since they changed so that people have to have a Facebook or Twitter account just to post there, I've been annoyed, because I sometimes posted to their article Pages. Douchebags.

It may not be just us. But if it is, so be it. This board is serving its purpose. I still don't get why the AOL boards were shut down. I realize in many cases, social media changed things, but not for what we do. I still go hunting for a message board format similar to the old AOL boards on occasion. I suppose we can use the old Yahoo boards too, but even they don't function exactly like the old AOL boards, and I hate the way my screen name shows up there, even though some people would find that trivial. I hate that I can't change the way it appears though, so it bugs me. That was my mistake though from when I first created an account there. I didn't realize I would be stuck with it afterward. The old CompuServe boards were okay. I think the format of those is superior to this one, and they were easier to work with because they had a better interface, but unfortunately they had to go and merge the SF Media forum with the SF Lit forum just months before the AOL boards were shut down, and one of the moderators who stayed in the Lit forum pretty much exclusively prior to the merge proved to be too goddamn overbearing once the two forums were combined into one. I tried ignoring him until I was fed up after he deleted an entire thread without so much as a warning to the participants in advance. It was a contentious thread about gay marriage after one of the major Comic Books decided to have a same-sex wedding. Things had gotten rather nasty, but pulling an entire thread without so much as a warning was going too far, so I finally said the hell with that place. They lost scores of members through the years, not just because of social media sites, but becsuse of bullshit like that, and they never reconsidered their own policy concerning moderation, so it was also their own fault. Anyway, one of these days I hope to stumble onto a format like the old AOL boards. Honestly, I don't like the functionality of this forum. It does serve it's purpose, but it still sucks IMO. And I wonder why a few others from the R&S board didn't follow us here. They just disappeared, without even telling us they wouldn't be coming over before the AOL boards shut down.
